Math looks pretty cool as a collage of numbers and symbols spread out all across the blacktop. It almost looks like art. No, it is art.
After Christmas and a few weeks of winter fun: sledding, skiing, and snowman building, Michigan students can become lethargic. Often the bitter cold keeps students inside and the dreary days cause students to lack motivation. Then the sun peeks out and students get energized even stir crazy. In Michigan, those few weeks between winter and nice warm weather can be difficult for both students and teachers. The occasional sunny day gives the students a taste of spring and gets them ready to be outside again. These hopes of summer fun typically get smashed by a few more days, or even weeks, of cold rainy weather. The school atmosphere becomes charged with restless energy. Student, parents, and teachers, everyone is ready for a change!
The past few weeks have been that rainy cold weather here in our small town. The students have been more than ready to get outside and shake out the winter lethargy. Finally, today we had a beautiful, sunny and warm day! I took full advantage. Science classes can easily be enjoyed outside. Even literature and art are easily planned as outdoor classes, but math. Math requires pencil, paper, rigorous work, a chalkboard, smartboard, or overhead, right?
Why not make the entire parking lot the chalkboard?
So, today, instead of doing math we made art.
